Terence is a versatile litigator committed to providing practical and cost-effective solutions to his clients. He joined Genesis Law Corporation in January 2014 as a Director, after having spent three years in Washington D.C. where he completed a Master’s degree programme (LLM) at Georgetown University Law Center and obtained a Graduate Certificate in International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution in 2012. Terence was admitted to the New York State Bar Association in 2013.
Terence was formerly a Partner at Rodyk & Davidson LLP, having started his practice at Helen Yeo and Partners (pre-merger with Rodyk & Davidson). He has experience in a broad range of dispute resolution work including litigation, arbitration and mediation in construction-related matters, insurance, banking, employment, tenancy, medical malpractice claims and partnership disputes.
Terence was part of the legal team in several of Singapore’s landmark cases, including: the Committee of Inquiry (COI) hearing into the Nicoll Highway collapse in 2004 (acting for the main contractor) and subsequent related arbitration proceedings; and the first of its kind medical negligence claim in Singapore by a mother against an obstetrician for damages arising from alleged negligence resulting in the birth of a child with Down’s syndrome (with arguments on the previously untested issue of whether such “wrongful life” claims were recognised in Singapore).
Other notable cases include advising major financial institutions in Singapore in relation to their obligations to customers (on allegations of “mis-selling”) in the wake of the Lehman Brothers collapse in 2008 and the consequent unravelling of various structured investment products sold in Singapore; acting for the majority shareholders in a shareholders’ dispute involving one of Singapore’s largest duck abattoirs; and representing one of the largest carriers in the global container shipping industry against its former managing director and other business associates in its successful appeal to the Court of Appeal in 2010.
Terence is an accredited mediator with the Centre for Dispute Resolution (UK) and Singapore Mediation Centre. He regularly volunteers his time as a mediator with the Small Claims Tribunal. In 2014, Terence was admitted as a Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators.
